Early 2000 – At a summer barbeque, a group of educators dreamed big about a school that would offer another educational option to students in North Central Massachusetts. The idea of for a charter school was born.
2001 – NCCES (North Central Charter Essential School) was chartered by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in May.
2002 – NCCES opened its doors to the first wave of students in September, welcoming a group of 235 from grades seven through nine.
2005 – Adding a new grade each year, NCCES finally reaches its current seven – twelfth grade range. In June the school graduates its first “class” of seniors – a class of one student!
2006 – At June’s commencement was the first full senior class, at a ceremony held in the auditorium at Fitchburg State University.
2012 – For the first time NCCES is named a Level One Middle & High School, the only school in our area to earn this distinction.
2013 – NCCES launches a re-branding campaign, and officially becomes Sizer School. What’s in a name? The school selected its new title in honor of Ted Sizer, a founding member of the school and renowned Teacher, charter school Leader, and Author.
2014 – After a long road and many different locations, Sizer School is donated the amazing gift of a new school facility at 500 Rindge Road. This building, made possible by an anonymous angel donor, is equipped with the latest technology and supplies and made ready for a new wave of students!
2015 – June’s commencement ceremony is the first ever held in Sizer’s own gymnasium, where flowers of purple and blue (the school colors) surrounded the podium of graduates.
