Student Leadership

At Sizer School we offer many opportunities for our scholors to expand themselves and develop as leaders. These opportunities include:

Student Council

Student Council is a newly formed, student-led governing body that helps the school to make decisions based on community input. This group is composed of officers and representatives from each Advisory, and is a means for students to organize events or suggest school changes based on student input.

Student Ambassadors

Student Ambassadors are the school’s team of student leaders. This group, ranging from 30-50 students, fill a variety of positions that enable student voice, strengthens the community, and improve communication between students, teachers and administration. Student Ambassadors fill a variety of community roles and are an extensive resource for supporting other students, community and education at Sizer School. Ambassadors are either self-nominated or nominated by others; and must attend a Summer Leadership Institute for multiple days each year. These trainings develop leadership skills as well as train the Ambassadors to be prepared to run our 'New Student Orientation Day'. Student Ambassadors are visible leaders in the school, and our community relies on them to keep the Sizer Six and our mission of “Think, Care, Act” alive.

For information about becoming a Student Ambassador, see Ms. Vazquez in room B101 or at [email protected].

United Way Youth Venture (UWYV)

United Way Youth Venture (UWYV) encourages young people and inspires them to initiate and create positive, lasting change in their communities. Ventures are completely youth-created and youth-led, and range from building skate parks to starting tutoring clubs that help younger students during lunch periods. To become a Venture Team youth a student will be required to complete an Action Plan, which is similar to a business plan. After planning and preparing, Venturers present their idea to a community panel which determines whether the Team's plan is ready to launch. In North Central Massachusetts, UWYV is a three way partnership between Ashoka’s Youth Venture, Mount Wachusett Community College and the United Way of North Central Massachusetts. Approved UWYV Teams receive up to $1,000 of seed funding to help launch their project. Since its inception in 2002, the UWYV partnership has launched 122 teams.

For information about joining Youth Venture, you can attend one of the meetings after school on Thursday in room D302, or contact Ms. Cook at [email protected]. For further information please refer to the Youth Venture website: www.uwyv.org.

Nurses Station Leaders

Nurses Station Leaders are the student assistants in Sizer’s Nurses’ Office. The Health Care Co-Op is a unique learning opportunity offered each semester that gives students a chance to serve in a public role. Students are responsible for answering the telephone, keeping a log of daily visits, and assisting the nurse with daily tasks such as filing, faxing, photo copying, etc. This role is geared towards but is not limited to students seeking a job in the health profession.

For more information about becoming a Nurse Station Leader, please see Mrs. Zwicker in the Nurse’s Office or at [email protected].

Peer Mediators

Peer Mediators are Sizer’s student-led conflict resolution volunteers. Sizer School and Mediation Services of North Central Massachusetts work together to implement the peer mediation program, which trains approximately thirty (30) students in grades 7-12. Teachers, administration, staff, and students may refer a conflict to mediation.

For more information about becoming a Peer Mediator for questions about the Peer Mediation process, see Mr. Goguen in room C202, at (978)345-9125 x414, or at [email protected] more information about Mediation Services of North Central Massachusetts, please refer to their website: www.mediationncm.org
