NCCES Board of Trustees
The Board of Trustees holds the school’s charter and is responsible for ensuring that the 3 accountability responsibilities are met: that the school is an academic success, that the organization is viable, and that the institution is faithful to the charter.
Seeking Members:
NCCES seeks people to serve on its Board of Trustees.
Representative Trustees: The election by constituency of 3 parents, 3 teachers, and 3 students will take place by September 22.
- Faculty nominations (you can nominate yourself) should be sent to the principal by Fri 9/15/06.
- Parent nominations (you can nominate yourself!) should be sent to Ms. Harden by Fri 9/15/06. Voting will take place at the Annual Meeting, 6:00 on Tues, 9/19.
- Student letters of interest (explain why you would like to serve as a Trustee and why you would do a good job) should be sent to Ms. Harden by Fri 9/15. Voting will take place in advisories on Wed 9/20.
Appointed Trustees: A subcommittee of the Board will be responsible for recruiting and nominating new members. The Board is especially seeking members with experience in finance, education, and marketing. If interested, please send a letter of interest describing what you would bring to the Board and why you’re interested: Stephanie Harden, Executive Director, NCCES, One Oak Hill Road, Fitchburg, MA 01420. Please include a current resume and describe the specific skills, experience, and point of view that you would bring to the Board’s work.
Trustee Job Description
Responsibilities
- Support and carry out the organization’s vision, mission, and purpose.
- Believe in and be an active advocate of the organization.
- Regularly attend, be prepared for, and participate in Board meetings, a monthly commitment of about 8 hours.
- Act in ways that contribute to the effective operation of the Board, especially focusing on the good of the organization and supporting Board decisions once they are made.
- Be aware of issues facing the school and the community.
- Serve actively on at least one sub-committee.
- Reach into diverse communities to help find donors, volunteers, and advocates.
- Participate in the activities of the school by attending programs and fund-raising events.
- Give a personal financial gift annually to the extent of personal ability.
- Use personal and professional contacts and expertise to help the school.
- Avoid the appearance or reality of conflict of interest. Disclose any potential conflicts.
Time Commitment
- Monthly board meeting 2 hours Second Monday of every month
- Monthly committee meeting 2 hours Fourth Monday (or alternative) of every month
- Preparation for meetings 2 hours
- Complete tasks outside regular meetings 2 hours
- Total comes to around 8 hours a month.

Criteria for Selection
- Skills sought: financial, educational, political, public relations, development, legal, community leadership, marketing, diversity expertise, facilities, arts, personnel, general management, mental health, real estate, public health, technology, athletics, design, governance, and strategic planning.
- Diversity sought: These are the different backgrounds and points of view that are important to give the Board a range of opinions: ethnicity/race, gender, socio-economic status, sexual orientation, age, gender identification, religious and political affiliation, immediate stakeholders and outside objective voices, educational background, physical disability, personality types and learning styles.
